Sponsor a Farmer

Elephant Pepper mission is to offer sustainable cash crop opportunities to rural small scale farmers that live in Elephant Range area's through out Africa. We promote the growing of Non Conflict Crops like chillies, that have a high cash crop value and animal like elephants simply dont like or eat. No eating - No conflict.

THE CHALLENGES

The farmers are often women who are the poorest of the poor, living in very remote areas. Local trade is often limited to very small village communities. Income generating activities are scarce.

In addition, these farms are located next to, or in the middle of elephant ranges. These conflicts very often lead to crop and property destruction, and loss of jobs and income.

TRADE

Through our "Trade not Aid" philosophy, we are able to solve both problems through a single program. Through training and coaching support programs, we enable rural farmer to cultivate chillies, which we then offer to purchase back as a cash crop, a fair trade prices. Farmers can of course sell to whoever they want, and are not forced to supply Elephant Pepper. The training can be used for many horticultural crops and is a investment in the long term production capacity of the communities we work with.

Farmers can earn on average $300.00 USD for a small 10 x 10 meter square area of chilli crop over a 4 month period. This is a part time effort, working 1 day a week.

By expanding can expand their production to cooperative growing groups, they end up earning many thousands of dollars for their respective communities.

ELEPHANTS HATE CHILLIS – WE LOVE ELEPHANTS

Elephants avoid chilli plants, and cultivation of this barrier crop and use of chilli deterents reduces elephant conflict in areas where farmers and elephants live side by side.
