A: Elephant Pepper headquarters is located in Livingstone, Zambia. Livingstone, where the Zambezi River pours over Victoria Falls, is the second largest city in Zambia. Elephant Pepper sources its chillies primarily from growers in the Zambezi River Valley of Zambia, but also works with growers in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, and an ever-widening network of growers through Southern Africa.
A: No! On the contrary, our sauces support elephant conservation by spreading the cultivation of chillies throughout Africa where farmers and elephants have historically come into conflict. Because chillies are an excellent natural elephant deterrent, growing chillies helps farmers protect their crops and livelihood and also protects elephants from angry farmers. For more information, read about the Elephant Pepper Development Trust.
A: Elephant Pepper Brand is a for-profit entity that manufactures and sells chilli sauces and other branded products using chillies grown by small-scale farmers in Africa. Elephant Pepper Development Trust is a Zambian registered NGO which trains and educates farmers on community-based "problem animal control" farming methods, including the use of inexpensive and appropriate chilli-based techniques, to protect their crops from elephants. The two organizations work collaboratively under a shared vision of wildlife preservation and economic development. Elephant Pepper, Pltd. donates 10% of its profits to Elephant Pepper Development Trust to further the Trust's work throughout the Zambezi region of Africa.
A: Elephant Pepper believes in upholding fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practices, and respect for human rights, culture, and the environment. We pay above-market prices for chillies to our commercial farms and small-scale growers, and ethical living wages to our farm workers. In addition, we offer our own employees on-site benefits, including subsidized staple food items, health benefits, and training and access to professional development opportunities.
A: The baobab is the iconic tree of Africa. As it ages, its trunk becomes very thick, while the branches at the top stay relatively thin and short.
Baobab trees produce fruits that are oblong and yellow, about the size and shape of a small mango, with many seeds inside. However, the skin of the fruit is fuzzy. Its flesh is sort of spongy, with a tangy taste, and is commonly known as cream of tartar.
Elephant Pepper's Baobab Gold Chilli Sauce combines two uniquely African ingredients – Elephant Pepper chillies and the fruit of the baobab tree – into one hot and tangy chilli sauce that can be used as a condiment with almost any meal. It is especially good with fish and curries. We also like it on nachos!
A: In most English-speaking countries around the world, the word "chilli" is spelled with two "L's".
